Ingram Micro, one of the world’s largest distributors of IT equipment and services is seeking a Director of Data Science located in Toronto for the Global Business Intelligence (GBI) Organization.

Ingram Micro's GBI organization is a profit-generating strategic service that provides IT, channel stakeholders, with the insights and industry intelligence to generate more business, expand reach, and achieve pinpoint accuracy in their sales and marketing efforts. Through the GBI org, the Data Science team develops high margin science offerings for Ingram’s Global Partners and internal Business Units across the company including Sales, Marketing, Operations, and Finance.


Featuring the largest transactional, product, and inventory databases in the IT Distribution Channel, the Data Science team offers Ingram’s global IT Vendor and Solution providers, Reseller Partners, and internal stakeholders customizable programs, services, and insights: including lead analytics, recommendation engines, propensity models, strategic analytic consulting, industry performance, customer health analysis, product lifecycle analysis, forecasts and growth targets, as well as supply chain optimization, logistics and operations analytics.



The Director of Data Science will have responsibility for Ingram’s Business Intelligence Data Science bench, including Machine Learning and AI model development, and innovative science-based offerings for Sales, Marketing, and Operations/Logistics. The science organization leverages the company’s unrivalled data assets to deliver value-added services to internal stakeholders and external clients. The Director’s team will focus on building scalable analytic tools, algorithms, professional services, with an eye toward profit-generating product offerings.


The individual will be a subject matter expert for Ingram’s data science practice. The Director will lead a growing team of 10+ M.Sc. and Ph.D. level direct reports responsible for developing a full-funnel machine learning (and predictive) analytics platform focused on propensity models, recommendation engines, forecasts, and operations research/industrial organization topics; driving profit-generating science innovation.


The role requires the individual to be hands-on, acquire a deep understanding of a complex B2B multi-tiered supply chain; being able to develop data-driven insights to drive strategic initiatives across various business units in all regions served by the company. The position will be responsible for developing and executing innovative science initiatives with a quantifiable benefit to the bottom line.


The combination of quantitative expertise and the ability to translate to a market offering is essential. The role will partner with the Executive Director, Data Science and Analytics, to create and implement the GBI organization’s larger analytic vision, develop next-gen offerings and lead an organizational entity prepared to deliver long-run value creation over the foreseeable future.



Key Responsibilities


  • Lead a growing team of +10 data scientists from diverse backgrounds.


  • Develop innovative data science solutions, products, and strategies across the global business and for specific business units.


  • Work closely with multiple business units to identify areas for further analysis, and supervise the data collection/model development/analysis/implementation/tracking/reported ROI.


  • Develop and execute innovative science models and tools to expand the scope of analytic product offerings, including but not limited to: traditional operations and logistics optimizations, customer and product segmentation, sales and marketing strategies/tactics, insights for vendors and reseller partners, as well as end-user lead generation.


  • Deliver demand generation programs via analytics capabilities, Sales and MarTech strategies that drive incremental profit opportunities through increased product sales, improved margin, cost savings measures, and fee-related revenues.


  • Continually assess the inventory of machine learning models and adjust as industry, company, and objectives change.


  • Gain executive and business unit approval for data science strategies. Test and implement strategies in live market conditions.


  • Work with and analyze structured and unstructured data, build POC ML models, develop new concepts and creative offerings leveraging his/her extensive data analytics capabilities, test and validate models in live settings prior to launching on a local, country, regional, and global scale.



Qualified candidates for the Director of Data Science should have a minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience leading a data science organization.


The successful candidate should possess at minimum a Master’s degree with a preference for a Ph.D. in a technical field such as Statistics, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics (applied micro, applied econometrics, empirical IO, labor, finance, behavioral, applied macro/time series).


The Director of Data Science will report to the Exec Director of Global Data Science and Analytics, a Ph.D. Economist with experience in industry, government, and academics. The role will be part of the senior management team of Ingram Micro’s Global BI org, helping to lead one of the company’s most visible and high potential growth opportunities in the company; and be highly visible and impactful. The global data science team provides foundational support for the analytic offerings of the company.


  • Significant expertise leading the data science function of technology-intensive businesses.

  • Transformational and seasoned advanced analytics, data science and quantitative skills with proven ability to drive results and lead a team from vision through execution and delivery.


  • Ability to provide leadership by applying quantitative analytics to business problems.


  • A track record around driving innovation and transformative change.


  • Exceptional commercialization skills with prior experience leading efforts to turn ideas into profit-generating products and solutions.


  • Experience working effectively in complex organizations, satisfying the needs of diverse constituents, leading through a matrix and often working under the pressure of competing and sometimes conflicting priorities.


  • Superior communication, presentation, and client management skills.


  • A demonstrated ability to lead and motivate people and get results through others.


  • An ability to organize and manage multiple initiatives and priorities.


  • Problem analysis and resolution at a strategic and functional level.


  • Expertise in Python, R, JupyterLab, Querying Languages, MLOps Tools, data engineering/infrastructure tools, and cloud base infrastructure a plus
