At Ingram Micro, we embrace diversity on all levels. We’re present worldwide, which means we collaborate with people with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We believe that building diverse teams nurtures different ideas, approaches, and solutions, which leads to better decision-making and creativity.

Moreover, diverse teams have been shown to perform better. Studies consistently show that organizations with diverse workforces outperform their competitors in profitability, employee retention, and innovation.

We know that building a diverse team starts with inclusive hiring practices that ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. So today we’re sharing some simple strategies to get started:

Standardize interviews

Creating a consistent interview process helps eliminate biases. Using structured interviews – where each candidate is asked the same set of questions –   gives everyone a fair chance. This helps companies evaluate the candidates based on their qualifications and skills, rather than on personal preferences or unconscious bias.

Craft inclusive job descriptions

Small changes in the language used in job descriptions can make a big difference. Words like “aggressive” or “dominant” might appeal to certain groups, while words like “collaborative” or “supportive” could attract others. To avoid bias, use inclusive, neutral language that encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

Provide bias training

Everyone has unconscious biases. Offering regular training helps your hiring team become aware and learn how to overcome them. This means a more fair and objective hiring process.

Create an inclusive culture

Hiring diverse talent is just the beginning. To keep those employees engaged and motivated, it’s important to foster an inclusive culture. Mentorship programs, employee resource groups, and open conversations about diversity can help all employees feel valued and supported.

Streamline your candidate screening process

The screening phase is often where unconscious biases emerge, favoring candidates with top-tier education or flawless resumes. While these criteria may seem objective, they can inadvertently exclude talented individuals who didn’t have access to ideal opportunities but possess exceptional potential.

Positive outcomes from hiring diverse teams

We are certain that hiring diverse teams offers numerous benefits that extend across creativity, employee satisfaction, and organizational success. Here’s how diversity positively impacts businesses:

Diverse teams bring varied perspectives, experiences, and problem-solving approaches to the table. This diversity of thought fosters creativity, enabling organizations to generate fresh ideas and solutions that might not arise in homogenous teams.

When teams include individuals with different viewpoints, they are more likely to consider a broader range of options and make well-rounded decisions. This leads to outcomes that are more effective and adaptable in dynamic markets.

Employees in diverse environments often feel more valued and respected, contributing to higher levels of job satisfaction and morale. This sense of belonging reduces turnover rates and encourages employees to bring their best selves to work.

A diverse workforce mirrors the diverse customer base businesses serve. Teams with varied cultural and experiential backgrounds are better equipped to understand customer needs and preferences, leading to more effective products and services.

Inclusion fosters a collaborative environment where individuals can share ideas freely. This cooperation enhances team performance and boosts overall productivity, creating a more dynamic and efficient workplace.

Research consistently shows that diverse organizations outperform less diverse counterparts financially. This is largely due to their ability to innovate, adapt, and meet the needs of a broader audience.

By prioritizing diversity in hiring, organizations don’t just create a fairer workplace – they also position themselves for long-term success and resilience in an ever-changing world.

Beyond the standard diverse policies and outcomes, our company embraces a proactive approach to inclusion, recognizing that true diversity goes beyond numbers and reflects in the lived experiences of our team. By cultivating an environment where individuals from all walks of life can thrive, we create a workplace that is dynamic and enriching. Through initiatives and practices that celebrate individuality and connection, we demonstrate that diversity is a cornerstone of innovation, growth, and mutual respect.

Diversity in hiring is not just an ethical practice but also a source of inspiration and growth for any company. Working with people from different cultures allows us to learn about their unique beliefs, traditions, food, music, and stories, enriching our daily and professional lives. Additionally, a diverse team provides opportunities to practice various languages, enhancing our communication skills and intercultural understanding. These individuals bring color to the company, fostering an atmosphere of innovation, creativity, and inclusivity that benefits everyone.

At Ingram Micro, we believe in fostering a vibrant and inclusive community by organizing events that celebrate diversity and connection. Our language cafes provide a relaxed environment where employees can practice new languages, share linguistic tips, and build stronger cross-cultural bonds.

We also collaborate with the Jamba organization, which is dedicated to creating opportunities for people with diverse abilities, promoting inclusion, and supporting professional growth.

Another cherished tradition is Fika, a Swedish-inspired coffee break where team members gather to enjoy coffee, treats, and casual conversations, strengthening relationships and promoting a sense of belonging. These events not only enrich our workplace culture but also inspire collaboration, creativity, and mutual respect.
