What does a 29-year career at one company look like?

For Tyler Coughlan, President of Ingram Micro Canada, it began by supporting customers, learning the business from the inside out, and staying curious about what might come next. Today, he leads one of Ingram Micro's largest country organizations, overseeing everything from sales and operations to customer experience and strategy.

His story is a testament to the power of continuous learning, intentional career development, and a culture that creates opportunities for people to grow.

Starting on the ground floor

When Tyler joined Ingram Micro nearly three decades ago, he was looking for an opportunity to learn, contribute, and build a career.

His first role was in sales support, helping customers and gaining first-hand insight into the fast-paced world of technology distribution. Handling a high volume of customer interactions every day taught him the importance of service, responsiveness, and understanding customer needs.

While the role provided a strong foundation, Tyler was already thinking about how he could continue developing.

His first move was into business development, where he began managing his own customer territory. From there, he progressed through inside sales, field sales, leadership positions, customer experience roles, and executive management before becoming President of Ingram Micro Canada.

Looking back, Tyler believes growth starts with a willingness to keep learning and embrace new opportunities.

The power of intentional growth

A defining theme throughout Tyler's career has been intentionality.

"I was always thinking about what's next," he explains. Having clear goals, seeking guidance from mentors, and maintaining regular career conversations helped him understand what skills and experiences would prepare him for future opportunities.

One conversation, in particular, had a lasting impact.

While succeeding in a field sales role, Tyler was asked by a leader whether he wanted to continue doing the same work or challenge himself to take on broader responsibilities. That question stayed with him and ultimately led him into management. Today, he describes that decision as one of the most important turning points in his career.

His advice for associates is simple: don't wait for growth opportunities to find you. Be proactive about understanding what comes next, seek feedback, and create a plan for the future you want to build.

Leadership is about developing others

For Tyler, leadership is not defined by hierarchy or title. It's defined by impact.

Throughout his career, he has been influenced by leaders who challenged him, invested in his development, and encouraged him to think bigger. Today, he aims to do the same for others.

He believes one of the most important responsibilities of a leader is helping people recognize their own potential and creating opportunities for them to grow.

"If you see someone with talent, it's important to challenge them, help them stretch, and ask them where they want to be in three to five years," he says.

Tyler is also a strong advocate for career mobility across functions. Some of the most successful people he has worked with are those who have built experience across different parts of the business and consistently found ways to create value wherever they go.

That belief reflects one of the unique aspects of a career at Ingram Micro: there is no single path to success. Associates can grow in multiple directions, building new skills, experiences, and leadership capabilities along the way.

Leading an entire country

After holding leadership positions across sales, national solution providers, global sales, and customer experience, Tyler eventually stepped into country leadership.

The transition expanded both the scope and complexity of his responsibilities.

"As a country leader, you're responsible for all of it," he says. "Operations, customer relationships, vendor relationships, planning, budgeting, every department."

Success at this level requires more than operational expertise. It requires strategic thinking, financial acumen, and the ability to align an entire organization around a shared vision. Tyler emphasizes the importance of ensuring associates understand how their work contributes to broader business goals and how every team plays a role in delivering success.

Even as a country leader, learning remains a priority.

Whether it's understanding emerging technologies like AI, anticipating market trends, or strengthening new leadership capabilities, Tyler believes continuous development is essential for staying relevant and helping customers navigate change.

Creating a great place to work

Under Tyler's leadership, Ingram Micro Canada has earned recognition as a Great Place to Work.

For him, that recognition is not the objective itself. It's the result of a deliberate focus on culture and associate experience.

"It's not by accident," Tyler explains. "Associate experience is part of our strategy."

He believes culture is built through consistent actions that demonstrate appreciation, trust, and belonging. Celebrating achievements, recognizing contributions, supporting local communities, and investing in development opportunities all contribute to an environment where associates feel valued and connected.

Tyler also sees a direct connection between employee experience and business performance.

When people feel engaged, they bring more energy to their work, collaborate more effectively, and create better experiences for customers and partners. That's why culture isn't a standalone initiative. It's a critical part of how the business succeeds.

Advice for future leaders

When asked what advice he would give to someone just starting their career at Ingram Micro, Tyler returns to a few core principles that have guided his own journey.

Be curious. Ask questions. Find a mentor. Build relationships across the organization. Most importantly, take ownership of your development.

He encourages associates to learn about different functions, connect with people outside their immediate team, and actively explore opportunities across the business. The more they understand the broader organization, the more opportunities they can create for themselves.

After nearly three decades with Ingram Micro, Tyler remains optimistic about the future. He sees unprecedented opportunities being created through digital transformation, automation, data, and AI, enabling associates to spend more time creating value for customers and helping shape what's next.

His journey demonstrates what's possible when ambition is matched with curiosity, continuous learning, and the courage to keep growing.

At Ingram Micro, careers aren't built through a predefined path. They're built through the opportunities you pursue, the relationships you build, and the impact you create along the way.
