In today’s fast-paced business environment, developing and retaining top talent is crucial for organizational success. Ingram Micro’s Talent Development Journey (TDJ) is a prime example of how a well-structured program can accelerate leadership pipelines and enhance employee engagement. Launched in 2023, the TDJ has evolved into a comprehensive framework that supports career progression and fosters a sense of belonging among participants. This blog post delves into the key components, challenges, and successes of the TDJ, highlighting its impact on individuals and the organization.

Jessica Bendel, Director of Talent Management & Organization Development EMEA, the project leader in the program, explains, “The purpose of the project when it started was to have a global framework for talent development for our top talent at Ingram Micro.”

Key Components of the Program:

  1. Development Plan: this tool empowers participants to take ownership of their development journey, encouraging proactive engagement in their growth. “It’s very much about them proactively knowing how to foster their on-the-job development”, says Jessica.
  2. People Manager and HR Partner Enablement: workshops and ongoing support help managers and HR partners contribute effectively to participants’ development. Jessica notes, “We offer development workshops for both people managers and HR partners and ongoing support throughout the journey”.
  3. Development Centre: Regional events where associates showcase their talent, receive feedback, and network with executives. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to connect with executives and peers from across the organization,” Jessica highlights.
  4. Development Toolkit: Includes leadership development programs, one-on-one mentoring, projects, stretch assignments, and structured learning blocks. Jessica emphasizes “We have identified the top four most impactful resources that help our talents to develop.”
  5. Peer-to-Peer Collaboration: Encourages cross-functional and cross-country collaboration, fostering diversity and inclusion.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

A key element of TDJ’s success is its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The program fosters collaboration among diverse groups of people from multiple countries, functions, and gender representation. This inclusive approach has been validated by participants as a critical factor in the program’s effectiveness. Jessica shares, “Our program’s success is deeply rooted in its ability to bring together diverse perspectives and experiences, which enriches the learning and development process for everyone involved.”

Evolution and Challenges

The TDJ has evolved from a simple guideline to a live program with a clear governance model and strong stakeholder management. “One of the biggest challenges we faced right at the beginning was the design of a program that meets diverse needs of participants across different regions”. The involvement of business leaders was crucial for the program’s success, ensuring that it remained relevant and impactful. “95% of our business leaders within the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) have been actively involved,” Jessica proudly states.

Impact on Associates

The TDJ has significantly impacted career progression and engagement at Ingram Micro. Participants have reported high satisfaction scores, with many experiencing career growth within the organization. The program’s emphasis on proactive development and continuous feedback has helped participants feel more engaged and connected to the company. Jessica shares, “We have more than 90% satisfaction scores across all regions.”

Continuous Improvement

Continuous improvement is a cornerstone of the TDJ. Participant feedback has led to the introduction of project-based work and a more rigorous selection process for future cohorts. This adaptability ensures that the program remains relevant and effective in meeting the organization's and its associates' needs. “We actively ask participants for feedback throughout the program and use this feedback to improve programs,” Jessica explains.

Recognition and Future Plans

TDJ’s success has been recognized with the 2024 Global Recognition Award. The program is now available globally and can be adapted to different levels within the organization. This commitment to talent development underscores the company’s dedication to fostering a culture of growth and innovation. “It is now available on a global level, which is very exciting. We are also now finalists of the 2025 Learning Excellence Awards, up against companies such as EY and Danone,” says Jessica.
