Hope McGarry on career growth at Ingram Micro Australia
Career growth is rarely a straight line. At Ingram Micro, it is often shaped by curiosity, adaptability, and the willingness to embrace new challenges.
That has certainly been true for Hope McGarry, VP and Chief Country Executive of Ingram Micro Australia. In just three and a half years with Ingram Micro, Hope expanded her responsibilities multiple times before stepping into her current leadership role.
Her journey reflects the culture at Ingram Micro, where associates are encouraged to grow, explore opportunities, and continuously learn across different areas of the business.
Growing through opportunity
Before joining Ingram Micro, Hope spent nearly three decades in the IT industry, primarily on the vendor side of the business. That experience helped her bring a fresh perspective into distribution and the wider technology ecosystem.
“The majority of my experience in my career has been on the vendor side and I think that has allowed me to bring a unique perspective into Ingram Micro,” she explains.
Hope initially joined Ingram Micro to lead the Advanced Solutions business in Australia. Within months, her role expanded into additional business lines, including end-user computing, components, cloud, cybersecurity, and software.
“One of the really great things about Ingram Micro is that the only limit to what you can achieve here is the limit that you place on yourself.”
For Hope, those opportunities became key moments of growth and preparation for broader leadership responsibilities.
Capability lives on the other side of fear
For many professionals, career progression can feel intimidating. Hope believes growth often starts before you feel fully ready.
“There is a quote by Michelle Obama and she says: ‘Capability is on the other side of fear.’ and I truly believe that. It is only through doing the things that challenge us most that capability and confidence are built”
That mindset encouraged her to keep saying yes to unfamiliar opportunities and continue building new skills along the way.
“I’ve always come from a place of yes in my career,” Hope shares. “Knowing that irrespective of the role I’m going to take on, it is going to present challenge and opportunity to grow.”
Her advice to associates is to embrace discomfort as part of growth and trust that development happens through experience.
Why feedback matters
Feedback has also played a major role in Hope’s leadership journey.
“I think feedback is always a gift,” she says. “None of us are perfect. All of us have the potential to grow.”
One piece of feedback that stayed with her was learning to balance ambition with sustainability.
“You can do it all, but you can’t do it all at once and you need to pace yourself.”
That advice encouraged Hope to prioritize wellbeing and role model healthy habits for her team, reinforcing the importance of people-first leadership.
Another memorable lesson came through a set of poker chips gifted by a former leader. The message was to contribute thoughtfully and create space for others to speak.
“Not everything that you want to say needs to be said and you need to provide space for other people to contribute.”
Today, Hope applies those lessons through what she calls “kind candor,” giving direct feedback with empathy and respect.
“When you can give direct feedback with kindness and come from a perspective of wanting people to be better, I think that feedback is received far more positively.”
Building a career with flexibility
Hope encourages associates to stay open-minded about how careers evolve and not focus solely on upward progression.
“Lateral moves can be the most critical decisions in your career journey that you will make,” she explains. “Upward moves are not always the answer.”
With opportunities across sales, marketing, operations, cybersecurity, cloud, and vendor management, associates at Ingram Micro can build broad and diverse career experiences that strengthen long-term growth.
“I don’t think there are many organizations that can offer that type of breadth of opportunity.”
Let’s shape tomorrow
Hope’s story is a reminder that career growth happens when people are empowered to learn, take chances, and support one another along the way.
At Ingram Micro, associates are encouraged to bring ambition, imagination, and courage to their careers while being supported by a collaborative global culture.
